Birds of a Feather

Hazel makes friends with the bird, Kehaar, and with the field mouse despite the objections and skepticism of the other rabbits. Both of the animals, in particular Kehaar, later play an integral part in helping the rabbits preserve Watership Down as their home. What is Richard Adams' message here? Would the outcome for the rabbits have been different if Hazel had not befriended these animals?

Richard Adams message was that if people who are different get along, they are all the better for it. If they had not befriended these animals than the Efrafrans would have recaptured them, and even if they hadn't, they would have caught the warren unprepared.

I think that Richard Adam's message here is that if your friends can help you even though they are not well liked by others. Without the animals the Efrafrans would have found them.

I think Richard Adam's message is even though someone might not be like you, they can still be your friend. I don't think Hazel and the gang could have rescued the does and Blackavar without Kehaar. Kehaar made some of the Owslafa nervous because he was so big and scary and birds and rabbits don't usually 'hang out' together. Without Kehaar, General Woundwort probably would have captured them and killed everyone.
